My Friend Fox

Author(s): Heidi Everett

Biography

The fox sits on the outer waiting for me to discover him because at the moment, I am on the outer too. He watches me. Can you see him? He's clever at hiding.

Heidi Everett has long felt the weight of her mental health record, which she has carried along with her from GP clinics to psych wards, social work offices to homeless agencies. The words that describe her in that paper record are not her own: Primary diagnosis - Schizoaffective; Comorbidity - Major depression, juvenile autism. With its diagnoses the mental health system has decreed she cannot be a credible witness to her own life.

My Friend Fox is a story of belonging, a story that might be familiar to some - searching everywhere to finally feel at home. It is Heidi's story. Her own version of events, a counterweight to the story she did not get to write in the 'official record' of her life.

Alongside Heidi's beautifully lyrical words are her exquisite line drawings, making My Friend Fox a book to be read, treasured, and gifted.
